Consider the work of Bill Viola. What are the different ways that time is experienced in his Room for St. John of the Cross?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: The ideal answer should include:
1. This video installation alludes to a time that St. John of the Cross was imprisoned in a small cell and to the saint's dreams, recorded in his poems, of flying away across the mountains.
2. A small television appears in a small cubicle. The television screen shows a color image of a mountain, evoking the saint's small cell and his dreams. The videotape is a single shot with little movement. A low voice, barely audible, is heard reading poetry.
3. Behind the cubicle, an image projected on a large screen depicts mountains shot with an unstable handheld camera that moves dramatically in contrast to the still image in the cubicle.
4. The viewer must move to see the piece, experiencing many of the elements of the work at once.
