What are the common diseases and ailments of gerbils? What are their symptoms and how should they

be treated?

?? Colds—Loss of appetite, constant sneezing, and runny eyes and nose indicate a cold. The gerbil may also
be lethargic or inactive. Control the environment, including temperature changes, overcrowded conditions,
and damp or drafty conditions
?? Red nose—This condition is indicated by hair loss and red swollen areas of the skin around the nose
and muzzle. Overcrowding, high humidity, coarse bedding, and other environmental conditions may be
contributing factors. Consult with veterinarian.
?? Tyzzer's disease—Rough hair coat, diarrhea, loss of weight, listlessness, and inactivity indicate Tyzzer's
disease. Treatments are usually ineffective.
?? Parasites—Dull fur, fur falling out, and unusual or continuous scratching indicate parasites. Dusting and
bushing the animal with flea powder formulated for cats and other small animals is recommended.
?? Fits or seizures—The animal appears to go into a trance, with the body remaining motionless or slightly
trembling; these attacks last only a few seconds. Treatment is not needed. Animals showing signs of
seizures should not be mated.
