Answers should identify the concept of civil disobedience as the deliberate, discriminate violation of the law for a vital social purpose and the importance of tactics that have a symbolic value. The purpose of civil disobedience is typically to attract public attention and provoke sympathy to build pressure for reform. Answers should also identify civil disobedience as important to many social movements and employed by many NGOs. Examples may include Vietnam War protestors (including Students for a Democratic Society), protests against nuclear weapons in the 1980s, the 2011 Occupy movement, and the actions of Greenpeace.
