You are an editor of an American newspaper considering reprinting cartoons from the satirical French newspaper Charlie Hebdo. First, write an editor’s note defending the publication of the cartoons, and then write one explaining why you are not going to run them.
What will be an ideal response?
The reasons in favor of running the cartoons include showing what all of the conflict was about and supporting free speech rights. The reasons against running the cartoons include that they could lead to violence and that it is wrong to deliberately offend a group without there being a compelling reason to do so. It might be worth noting that Charlie Hebdo cartoons have offended most of the world’s religions at one time or another and that the cartoons are often deliberately as offensive as possible.
