What is the resource curse, and how does it impede long-term development?

Fill in the blank(s) with the appropriate word(s).

Countries that discover they have rich deposits of a valuable natural resource, such as oil, often have difficulty converting that sudden wealth into long-term economic growth. Often, the extraction of the wealth will lead to massive wealth creation for a few local elites involved in the industry or for government officials who can tax the proceeds. Corruption is a common result. Also, when great wealth is gained easily, it tends to devalue creative productivity in other industries, and this may hamper the more balanced growth of the economy as all the wealth is generated in the single resource sector.
