Describe sleep apnea.

What will be an ideal response?

Sleep apnea is defined as a temporary pause in breathing that lasts at least 10 seconds during sleep. Sleep apnea may be caused by air flow obstruction (obstructive sleep apnea), loss of neurologic breathing effort (central sleep apnea), or a combination of these two conditions (mixed sleep apnea). Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is diagnosed by nocturnal polysomnography and the severity is determined by the apnea and desaturation index.
