Why can't United and Delta Airlines lower their costs to match those of Southwest?
What will be an ideal response?
Many of the specific practices by which Southwest maintains its lower-cost position entail tradeoffs that the other
carriers can't make. United, Delta, and American don't have the option of flying just one type of aircraft, even if it
would save on training and maintenance costs. Nor can they abandon their expensive hub facilities, which are
integral to the logistics of their flight systems, even though the hub system and its accompanying gate fees are
much more costly than Southwest's reliance on secondary airports and smaller destination cities.
