In 1900, papers were competing in 60 percent of American cities. By 1972, only 4 percent of American cities had competing papers. Several large cities-Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.-have more than one paper, but in some of these cities the same business owns both papers.
