Discuss the role norms play on a team. Provide an example from your own experience where norms where used either effectively or ineffectively
What will be an ideal response?
Norms contribute to the establishment of a pattern of interaction that helps or
hinders the work of the team. For example, if the team establishes the norm that the
meeting does not begin until 10 or 15 minutes after the hour set for the meeting and that
the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually for social conversation, this decision can become a
huge barrier to productivity. If the team on the one hand establishes taking a vote on
controversial issues, this procedure could inhibit the potential for reaching consensus. If,
on the other hand, it agrees that every decision and discussion must reach consensus, then
the amount of time necessary to complete tasks may be greatly extended. It is important
that a team determine what norms will govern its behavior.
