Psychological disorders most often begin early, in childhood or adolescence. According to recent statistics, about one half of us will meet the DSM-IV-TR criteria for a psychological disorder at some point in our lives. Moreover, in any given year, approximately one quarter of us will experience a psychological disorder. The most widely used classification scheme for psychological disorders is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-IV-TR) of the American Psychological Association. This manual is currently in its fourth revision. The DSM-IV-TR provides information on functioning and diagnoses. It also gives a variety of other pertinent information. For example, the DSM-IV-TR discusses medical conditions and psychosocial issues which may affect a person's response to drug therapy and/or psychotherapy. Also, it includes global assessments that allow one to compare a person's level of functioning with their optimal, or previous, level of functioning.
