Why did the Articles of Confederation ultimately fail?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: The central government was not strong enough. Since the federal government could not impose taxes on its citizens, it could not pay its debts to other countries or afford to raise an army. National defense suffered due to a lack of taxation power and the inability to draft soldiers. The national economy suffered the most, however, since Congress could not regulate interstate commerce or the commerce between states and foreign powers and there was no common monetary system across the states.
