What are some of the tools used by the lighting designer?
What will be an ideal response?
A lighting designer's tools include Fresnels or spherical reflector spotlights, which give a soft edge to beams of light and ellipsoidal reflector spotlights that project a sharper light with a more clearly defined edge. They may call for the use of follow spots that have clearly defined beams and can follow an actor's movement across the stage. They use PAR (parabolic aluminized reflector) lamps, which are smaller, less expensive, more portable lights that can generate different types of light beams. They also use gobos, small metal plates with stencil-like shapes cut out of them that slide into a slot on the front of an ellipsoidal reflector spot, allowing light through in selected areas to create a specific shape or pattern on stage.
