DeCasper and Spence (1986) asked expectant mothers to read a Dr. Seuss story out loud during the last six weeks of their pregnancy. After the babies were born, they listened to a tape recording of their mother reading either the familiar Seuss story, or an unfamiliar story. The newborns' patterns of sucking indicated that their fetal experience influenced their auditory preferences after birth, thus suggesting that they had learned something about the Seuss story when they were third-trimester fetuses.
