• Javanese slendro scale (five equidistant intervals) and pelog scale (seven tones)
• pentatonic scales (five-note scales similar to playing only the black keys on a piano) and often heard in European folk music
• ragas—organized melodic matrices—used in classical music of South India (karnatic music)

• Arab modes (maqam) are characteristic scales that may include non-tempered "quarter tones"—see further explanation in Chapter 10.
