Discuss the following topics related to periodontitis, and write a synopsis of the discussion on a separate sheet of paper. A. Why was it necessary to reclassify the different types of periodontitis? B
Discuss the various types of periodontitis relating to host defects.
A. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, classification systems are necessary in order to provide a framework in which to scientifically study the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of diseases in an orderly way. The older classification system lacked detail necessary for adequate characterization of the many types of periodontal diseases encountered in clinical practice.
B. Some of the periodontal diseases have a host defect component in their development and progression. This means that certain cells in the body are involved with the development and progression of the periodontal diseases. For instance, research has found that aggressive periodontitis, a periodontal disease that occurs early in life with bone loss, occurs quickly and aggressively. In this situation, there is a defect in the function and number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. This is not seen in chronic periodontitis.
