What are some of the benefits of acquisition over internal development?

What will be an ideal response?

One of the primary advantages of acquisition over internal development isspeed. Although an acquisition quickly
establishes a foothold in a new business, internal development can take years. A corollary benefit is critical mass.
An acquisition ensures that a firm enters a new business with sufficient size and viable competitive strength. The
acquiring firm, for example, can be assured of entering at minimum efficient scale for cost purposes. As another
advantage, acquisitions provide access to complementary assets and resources. In developing a new business, a
firm invests its existing stock of resources and capabilities, and although it may develop new resources and
capabilities in the process, there's always the chance that it may simply expend existing resources. With an
acquisition, new resources and capabilities can be integrated with those of the buyer, who may actually improve its
competitive position in other businesses as well. Finally, entry by acquisition may foster a less competitive
environment. By acquiring an existing firm in a new business, the buyer eliminates a competitor that would
otherwise remain in the market.
