What is the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale? How is it used for research purposes?
What is meant by NBAS training, and what is the rationale of such training?
What will be an ideal response?
The NBAS is a neuromotor exam that is scored via examiner interaction with the
newborn. This instrument assesses general orientation, habituation speed, muscle tone,
and reflex development. It is best used as an outcome measure, for example, infants
with different medical conditions often score very differently on this measure. It should
not be used for making long-range predictions regarding newborns. In NBAS training
studies, parents are trained to administer this instrument. It is theorized that this
intervention will improve parent-infant interactions and encourage parents to "get to
know" their infants better.
