The DSM-5 recognizes that schizophrenia and related disorders occur on a spectrum that ranges from mild to severe. All involve abnormalities on one ore more of five dimensions: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and thinking, disorganized or abnormal motor behavior, and negative systems. Delusions involve a false belief of persecution, or the sense of being the victim of someone's intent to harm or harass. Hallucinations are vivid false perceptual experiences that are most commonly auditory. Disorganized speech and thinking are sometimes seen by a person rapidly switching from one topic to another. Abnormal motor disturbances may take any of several forms, ranging from agitation and hyperactivity to catatonia. Negative symptoms are defined by the absence of appropriate and "normal" behaviors and may include impoverished emotional responsiveness, lack of initiative in taking care of one's daily affairs, lack of interest in social interaction, and a decreased ability to experience pleasure. As for causes, biology, chemical toxins, stress, and other environmental factors have been implicated. It is possible that enlarged cerebral ventricles, structural problems with the hippocampus, dysregulation of dopamine receptors, and disordered genes are possible causes.
