How is adolescent pubertal development typically assessed? What methodological and

practical concerns are there with these assessments?

What will be an ideal response?

Adolescent pubertal development can be assessed via a physical exam, or by asking
raters to evaluate the adolescent's progress using rating scales, such as Tanner's Sexual
Maturation Scale. In general, health care experts are the best raters, followed by the
adolescents themselves. Although valid, some school officials and parents may object to
the use of these assessments, for example, the Tanner scales contain drawings or
pictures of nude adolescents.
