Why is folic acid important during pregnancy?
What will be an ideal response?
Folic acid is important during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, in the fetus. Because these defects are among the most common birth defects, it is important that the pregnant woman receive a supplement of 400 mcg of a folic acid supplement, in addition to any folate rich foods she may eat, to help prevent many of these conditions. Because the neural tube develops in the first few weeks of pregnancy, women should be encouraged to take a folic acid supplement prior to becoming pregnant, because by the time she finds out she is pregnant it may be too late to reduce the risk of neural tube defects.
