There seems to be an assumption that studying history by taking a history course can make one skilled at historical research. It is not common for students to take a course on how to perform historical research. Regular history courses present the end product of the research, not the process by which the research was uncovered. Reading history books is not a method of historical research. It is important to understand the historical nature of events, people, etc. Without knowledge of the past, it is impossible to interpret the present and make projections of the future. It provides the necessary information to use in the present to determine how things may be in the future.
