Describe the typical pattern of an abusive relationship between spouses or partners

Although every situation is different, many abusive relationships follow a similar pattern. At first, the abuser is charming and likeable. As the relationship continues, the abuser (typically the male) begins to control the woman's behavior and activities. At first these demands may be made in a flattering way, such as saying, "I want to spend more time with you." The abuser continues to exert more and more control over the victim, demanding an explanation for trivial behaviors or telling the victim what to do. Once the abuser has established a sense of power over the victim, he hits, slaps, or beats the victim, usually blaming her for causing the problems they are having. The abuser may promise never to do it again, but the cycle is likely to continue as long as the victim stays in the relationship.
