During the circumscribing phase, deterioration and choices that affect the relationship are still being made, such as avoiding taboo topics, appearing happy in public, or reducing the amount of verbal and nonverbal communication within the relationship. During the stagnating phase, there is a difference in
that nothing is actively happening to move the relationship towards repair or termination. In essence,
the partners are at a standstill and not making any choices regarding the future of the relationship.
