The United States of America is a country of immigrants, and it is populated by people from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As a dental front office administrator, it is likely that you will encounter people from many different cultural backgrounds, and it is important that your interaction be pleasant and professional despite cultural differences. Cultural sensitivity is a set of appropriate behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and policies that enable a dental practice or individual to work effectively in cross-cultural situations based on the behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs of the patients served.
Greetings differ vastly among different cultures. Depending on location, a kiss on the cheek, a hug, or a handshake may be a proper part of a greeting. Even though you may encounter people from many different cultures, you should offer a greeting that is in accordance with American tradition. However, do not be offended if your greeting is not well-received or is not returned. Also remember never to refuse a cross-cultural greeting and never to force a greeting upon someone who appears uncomfortable or resistant to your greeting. A greeting is most often the first interaction you have with a patient, so it is important that you do your best to make it as pleasant and professional as possible.
Not all cultures are as time-conscious as American culture, and this can become a problem with scheduled appointments. If a problem arises, you should do your best to work with the patient and transcend cultural disparities. People who do not speak English fluently or are hearing impaired may use intonations or levels of voice that can be mistaken for rude behavior. Most often these people are not being rude, however. If you do encounter a sincerely rude client, it is important to remain calm and refrain from becoming offended. Be sure to be considerate to all cultures and courteous to all patients. Remember that it is your job to help facilitate the patients' needs.
Cross-cultural communication is about dealing with people from other cultures in a way that minimizes misunderstandings and maximizes your potential to create strong cross-cultural relationships. A dental practice that reflects and values ethnic and cultural diversity will maximize productivity and work more effectively with culturally diverse patients.
