According to Troiden's theory, here are the four stages Chuck would go through.
Stage 1: Sensitization. In this stage, which usually occurs before puberty, Chuck probably had a general feeling of
being different from his or her same-sex peers.
Stage 2: Identity confusion. Usually first experienced during adolescence, this stage involves a conflict between
Chuck's prior self-image and his current feelings of same-sex arousal (or lack of heterosexual arousal).
Stage 3: Identity assumption. This stage often begins during the early 20s. Chuck defined and accepted himself as
homosexual and associated regularly with homosexual peer groups.
Stage 4: Commitment. This stage began when Chuck entered a same-sex emotional and sexual relationship. Chuck
then adopted homosexuality as a way of life, viewed a homosexual identity as a valid and satisfying self-identity,
and probably came out to others.
