A nocturnal panic attack describes an incidence in which an individual is awakened from sleep in a state of panic. Of those diagnosed with panic disorder, approximately 50 to 60 percent report having experienced a nocturnal panic attack at least once. Nocturnal panic attacks occur in Stage 2 and Stage 3 sleep, usually a few hours after falling asleep.
