Give examples to illustrate the concepts of activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. What do the statistics say about the realities of these abilities in older adulthood?
What will be an ideal response?
Activities of daily living are self-help tasks that include all aspects of self-care. IADLs are tasks that involve intellect and cognitive functioning such as managing the checkbook, etc. Disabilities interfere with either or both of these. The rates of disability increase with age. Almost 50% of those over 75 report some difficulty with ADLs or IADLs. This means that the other half do not have difficulties. The rates of disability have been declining steadily over the past few decades.
