Describe the development of the proscenium theatre. Why do you think it continues, at least in the Western world, to be the most prevalent theatrical configuration?

Students could start by talking about the invention of the "fourth wall" and the
intimate settings created by having scenery on all three sides of the space. The student
could then move into the accomodating nature of such spaces and the growth in popularity
of big budget musicals that continues on into current shows on Broadway and the like.
