A patient receives treatment in the emergency room, prior to being admitted.  Briefly discuss how the billing of the ER visit and the admission is handled.

What will be an ideal response?

The emergency room visit becomes a component of the admission--all charges are rolled into the admission and the admission begins with the presentation to the emergency room.
(This is not true for CAH facilities when treating Medicare beneficiaries. In this type of facility--ER, OPS, and OBSV are billed separately. This can become a challenge from a coding perspective since what the patient presented for may not be the reason for the admission.
