Explain the concept and purpose of regression. Give an example of linear regression and an example of multiple regression.
What will be an ideal response?
• Regression is a statistical procedure which can be used to make predictions about an outcome (such as score on a criterion measure) based on a test score (or some other type of measurement).
• When the outcomes can be shown to be significantly related to the predictor (i.e., valid), these predictions can then be used for decision making purposes such as determining who should be admitted into an educational program or selected for a job.
• We use the statistical process called linear regression when we use one set of test scores (X) to predict one set of criterion scores.
• We use the statistical process of multiple regression when we have more than one set of test scores used for predicting a single criterion.
