It is critical to the success of an informative speech that the audience remember the speaker?s

information. Your textbook suggests four ways that a speaker can work to enhance audience
retention.

In a well-developed essay, discuss how each can make an informative speech more
memorable. Select examples from speeches you have heard in class (whether a good example
of the technique or a failure to use the technique) to illustrate your answer.
What will be an ideal response?

(1 ) Use adult learning principles to provide information listener?s can use immediately,
involve them actively in the process, connect their life experiences with the new
information, and provide and explain the relevancy of the information. (2 ) Build in
redundancy. Tell them what you?re going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you?ve
told them. The use of previews and summaries helps accomplish this. (3 ) Reinforce key
ideas verbally. Use phrases such as ?the key idea? or ?the most important idea is...? (4 )
Reinforce ideas nonverbally: use gestures, pauses, vocal inflections, and movement to
emphasize major ideas.
