Discuss the debate over U.S. immigration policies, and present both sides of the immigration debate. Why is immigration such a challenge for the United States?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers should present immigration as an intermestic issue which fuses international and domestic issues. Advocates of open-immigration policies cite the “brain gain” phenomenon, the fiscal benefits for the United States, and the need for reform of the immigration processing mechanisms. Opponents of more open immigration cite threats to homeland security, concerns over social changes, infrastructure concerns, and the need for changes to state and local policies as well as labor reform. Answers should address the challenge of immigration in the United States as stemming from already hosting the largest share of the world’s immigrants, with a large population of undocumented resident aliens.
