In Case's Neo-Piagetian theory, the driving forces of cognitive change are changes in working memory. Working memory may change in term of absolute capacity. Working memory capacity may also change in terms of efficiency
Describe the difference between these two possibilities, and indicate which of the two was emphasized in Case's theory.
What will be an ideal response?
Imagine that working memory capacity is a box. When absolute working memory capacity changes, the box changes its size—it gets bigger or smaller. However, when the efficiency of working memory changes, the size of the box doesn't change, but the number of things you can fit into the box at one time does. Case emphasized changes in the efficiency of working memory in his theory—that is, with practice and maturation, children use their working memory capacity more efficiently.
