What steps should an interviewer take when preparing guidelines for the interview to be ready for the interviewing experience?

First, interviewers should determine the nature of their investigation and objectives of research as a starting point to write guidelines for the interview. Then interviewers should create an outline listing all the categories relevant to the study to visualize the general format of the guidelines. The outline should include all conceptual areas relevant to each topic under investigation in the interview. Then list general inquiries under each conceptual area. These are items that can be formed into specific questions. For an unstandardized interview, this is the last step, and the researcher should simply remember not to force the interview down a path matching his/her research goals. For semistandardized and standardized interviews, the interviewer must take it a step further, and create a relevant question for each item listed under a conceptual heading. The questions should be written in a standard, colloquial format so the interview flows more like a conversation. Depending on the interview structure and the informant's response, the interview can choose to follow some or all of the questions with another probing question.
