The gate-control theory of pain holds that incoming pain sensations must pass through a "gate" in the spinal cord that can be closed, thus blocking ascending pain signals. Relatively little support has been found for the neural circuitry proposed by the gate-control theory and supports other potential mechanisms over the gate-control theory. These include the role of the endorphins, the descending neural pathway, and glial cells.
