The northern school of painting was more conservative and traditional (Fig. 18.26). A highly refined decorative style was produced which emphasizes the technical skill of the painter, a rich use of color, and a reliance on traditional Chinese themes such as the birds and flowers genre. There were also included symbolic meanings that refer to the emperor.
