Explain how you can use a router to protect your computer from intrusions.

What will be an ideal response?

In a typical LAN, the router is a single point of contact between local devices and the Internet. Two networks can interconnect using a device called a gateway. The routers used on local area networks contain gateway circuitry that allows the LAN to exchange data with the Internet. The router's IP address is the only one that can be accessed directly from the Internet. The rest of the devices in a LAN have non-routable IP addresses that cannot be accessed directly from the Internet. Routers offer network security because they allow external data into the LAN only if a local device specifically requests the data for a download, Web page, or other service. Data that is not specifically requested is blocked, which prevents hackers from randomly choosing an IP address and successfully sending port probes and malware to it.
