Explain the concept of backward design

One common method for developing an outcome logic model is through backward design. Backward design requires starting with the end in mind and "moving forward." In backward design, teams start with the purpose of the project, select indicators that would indicate progress, and then plan the activities and outputs that precede. As commonly understood, logic models read from left to right (if X, then Y); however, in a backward design planning process, work starts at the far right of the model and moves to the left. The practice of starting with desired outcomes is not uncommon; in fact, it's an increasing occurrence. Total quality improvement, curriculum design, and product design are other processes that start with identifying the desired outcomes.?
