If you had this information readily available, how would you determine the ideal partitioning?
What will be an ideal response?
One technique would be to collect statistics about the arrival rates and service
needs of the jobs in the typical job mix and then reapportion the partitions in
proportion to the distribution of jobs.Another would be to use the statistics to
develop a simulation of the operation of the system over a reasonable period of
time. The simulation could then be fine tuned until a responsible level of performance
was achieved, and then the actual system partitions could be modified.
Simulation is discussed in Chapter 14, Performance and Processor Design.
