What are normal values for forms of hemoglobin found in an infant under the age of 1 year? Over the age of 1? If they are the same, why? If they are different, why?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Under age 1: 90-95% hemoglobin F; up to 5% hemoglobin A1
Over age 1: 90-95% hemoglobin A1; up to 2% Hgb F; up to 3% Hgb A2
They are different because of the gamma-beta globin chain switch. The conversion of gamma chain to beta chain production changes production of Hb F to Hb A.
