While working as a medical assistant, the physician asks you to make a copy of a patient's medical record. While at the copy machine, a fellow worker is waiting to use the copier

Your coworker begins asking you questions about the patient's file and begins to read the photocopied record. How would you handle this situation?

The correct way to handle this situation is to protect the patient information. Calmly turn the patient information over to stop the coworker from reading the chart. It may also be necessary to kindly remind your coworker that it is inappropriate for anyone not directly involved with patient care to have access to patient records. Stepping away from the copy machine and returning when you are able to privately copy the information is also an option.
