What is the "imaginary audience?"

What will be an ideal response?

The imaginary audience is a part of adolescent egocentrism. Adolescents who express it believe that they are on center stage, surrounded more by critics than admirers. They think that other people are concerned with their behavior or appearance far more than they really are. The imaginary audience may account for the intense desire for privacy common among adolescents and for their preoccupation with their appearance.
