Why is it not necessary to add extra space between sentences by pressing the spacebar twice?

What will be an ideal response?

Double spaces were needed during the days of the typewriter when type was monospaced, meaning each letter required the same amount of space. The extra space separated the sentences. Today’s page layout software uses typefaces that are proportionately spaced, meaning the typeface designer has built in required space on each side of letters and punctuation.
