In these disorders, we see major disturbances in memory, reasoning, judgment, impulse control, and personality. This combination usually leaves people confused, suspicious, apathetic, or withdrawn.
Some common causes of neurocognitive disorders are circulatory problems, repeated strokes, or general shrinkage and atrophy of the brain. Alzheimer's disease is the most common neurocognitive disorder. Alzheimer's victims slowly lose the ability to work, cook, drive, read, write, or do arithmetic. Eventually they are mute and bedridden. Alzheimer's disease appears to be caused by unusual webs and tangles in the brain that damage areas important for memory and learning. Genetic factors can increase the risk of developing this devastating disease.
