First, you should be aware of all of the nonverbal elements of communication. Pay
attention to those elements in addition to the words a person uses. Second, be willing to
set aside your own agendas and needs momentarily to pay attention to what the other
person may be trying to communicate. Pay attention to the cultural backgrounds of
others you are communicating with. Sometimes even different areas of the country or
state will make a difference in communication rules. Finally, look for cues of
immediacy, arousal, and dominance.
