What is a lap child, a knee child and a yard child?

What will be an ideal response?

These terms were coined by Margaret Mead as she was studying children with their mothers. Lap children are age 0-2 and are in near-constant dependence on their mothers to care for them. Knee children are age 3-4 and are still cared for mainly by their mothers, but spend time with other children. Yard children are 5-6 years and they are given more space to venture beyond the immediate family and into the social world.
