What are the four stages of the sexual response cycle? Describe at least one element of each

What will be an ideal response?

* Excitement: first sign of arousal in men is erection of the penis; in women, the vaginal walls become engorged with blood.
* Plateau: the diameter of the penis increases and the testicles may increase in size from 50% to 100%; in women, the tissue of the outer third of the vagina becomes engorged with blood, which actually narrows the vaginal opening by 30% to 50%.
* Orgasm: rhythmic contractions occur and there is ejaculation of semen; in women, rhythmic contractions occur.
* Resolution: the erection is lost and another orgasm is not possible during the refractory period; in women, physiological responses drop below the plateau level. (See Table 10-1, p. 407).
