Imagine that you are a professor putting together an Introduction to Public Speaking course
During the first week of classes, you must give your students a two-minute speech to help
them overcome their initial fear of public speaking. You?ve decided that a descriptive speech
is the best option. What type of descriptive speech will you assign? What factors went into
your decision?
What will be an ideal response?
Besides requiring that students understand the purpose of descriptive speaking and the
five types of descriptive speeches (introducing yourself, introducing a classmate,
describing a place, describing an event, describing historical events), this question
requires that students can explain the advantages and disadvantages of using each one.
While there is no one right answer, many students will opt for either the
self-introduction because the content is easy to organize or introducing a friend, which
gives students with high levels of anxiety a partner in their first assignment.
