How should a health care professional respond to an extremely cheerful patient?
If the patient seems to be genuinely feeling better or is coping with the illness effectively, accept the cheerfulness at face value. However, some patients use excessive cheerfulness to cover up anxiety or other negative emotions. Be alert to any signs that the patient has unexpressed feelings or needs.
