Characterize the two main forms of mood disorder.
What will be an ideal response?
The two main forms of mood disorder are unipolar, in which a person only experiences depression, and bipolar, in which a person has mood swings that range from hypomania or mania to depression. A person with bipolar disorder, however, may not exhibit any depression. The mood disorders are differentiated in terms of severity-the number of areas of life that are impaired, and the degree and duration of impairment-and whether the disorder is acute, chronic, or intermittent. In addition, each type of mood disorder is further divided into multiple subtypes.
